Project Heart Start in Schools
In 2016, legislation initiated by Project Heart Start was passed requiring all Public High Schools to train students in four lifesaving skills before graduation.
The Project Heart Start Program
The program consists of 4 components:
How to perform compression only CPR
Trainees watch an instructional video and practice delivering high quality compressions on a CPR mannequin.
How to use and automated external defibrillator
Participants will be introduced to the AED (automated external defibrillator) trainer and learn how to quickly use this device.
How to save a choking victim
Trainees will learn how to deliver the abdominal thrust technique using our choking vests.
How to recognize the signs of a heart attack
Train the Trainer Program
How it works:
We train individuals who are interested and capable to become facilitators of the Project Heart Start Program. In the high school setting, we identify students who are interested in a medical career to become facilitators. They are supervised by individuals in the school who are health educators. In many schools, the teachers are responsible for the training.
We provide:
Facilitator Training and support
AED Trainer Device
Choking Vest
Training Videos
Manuals
Project Heart Start Training Video
This Project Heart Start training video was produced in 2010 by Dr. Barry W Ramo and KOAT (ABC) to teach New Mexicans four lifesaving skills. Since then, over 140,000 people have been trained!
Thanks to support from the NM Heart Institute Foundation and generous donors, Project Heart Start is able to provide training at no cost! We will teach your trainers the lifesaving skills everyone should learn to help increase the survival rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.
